Western Uganda has been keeping a secret. Crater lakes, ancient caves, royal celebrations — and it's only four hours from Kampala.
Fort Portal is one of Uganda's most beautiful towns — ringed by the Rwenzori Mountains, surrounded by crater lakes that glow turquoise in the afternoon light, and home to caves that carry stories the Tooro Kingdom has told for centuries. This September weekend lands right in the middle of the Kings Coronation Anniversary celebrations — which means the whole region is alive with culture, colour, and the kind of energy you can only find when a kingdom marks its history.
Friday, 11 September
Leave Kampala in the morning and let the road do what it does best — take you somewhere completely different. As you climb towards Fort Portal, the landscape shifts: greener, cooler, more dramatic. The Rwenzori peaks appear on the horizon. The air changes.
Your comfortable safari vehicle delivers you to Kalya Courts Hotel in the heart of Fort Portal — your bed-and-breakfast home for the next two nights, well located and ready for a weekend that's about to be full.
The afternoon is yours to settle in, explore the town, and feel the energy of the coronation celebrations already building around you.
Saturday, 12 September
The morning begins at Amabeere Ga Nyina Mwiru — the ancient stalactite caves of the Tooro Kingdom, draped in history and legend. The name means 'the breasts of Nyina Mwiru,' and the story behind it is one of the most compelling in Ugandan oral tradition — a royal tale of beauty, betrayal and power that your guide will bring to life as you explore the cave formations. This is not a tourist attraction. This is a living cultural site that Ugandans have visited for generations.
Then the crater lake drive and waterfall tour. Dozens of volcanic crater lakes dot the landscape around the town, each one a different shade of blue or green depending on the time of day. The road winds between them, stopping at viewpoints where the view is genuinely extraordinary. Waterfalls thread through the hillsides between the lakes.
And then — the Kings Coronation Anniversary celebrations. The Tooro Kingdom marks this occasion with ceremony, music, traditional dance and royal pageantry. Few things connect you to a place like witnessing its celebrations.
Sunday, 13 September
A final breakfast with the Rwenzoris on the horizon. One last look at the town before your safari vehicle carries you back east towards Kampala — four hours of beautiful road, full of everything the weekend gave you.
Fort Portal has a way of making people want to come back. You'll understand why before you've even left.
